RAs must have faculty or staff (outside of Campus Life staff) attend at least ONE program per semester. Why? To help residents build relationships with faculty/staff outside traditional settings (ex: classroom/speakers)
1. The faculty/staff program MUST occur in/at a Residence Hall 2. Deadlines: -In the fall, programs must occur before Thanksgiving Break -In the spring, programs must occur before Spring Break 3. The faculty or staff you invite DO NOT have to present or be a speaker! Think outside the box! -Invite faculty/staff just to enjoy food with the residents … maybe have some "conversation starters” prepared to get students interacting with your faculty/staff -Faculty staff can share on something outside their field –a math professor could share about weight loss & exercise, an admissions counselor could share some favorite recipes to make on a budget, etc. 4. The following staff do NOT count for faculty/staff programming as they are already present/visible in the halls and after hours to residents: -Residence Life Staff -Student Activities Staff -Campus Safety -Graduate Students (the faculty/staff must be full time professional staff!)
PURPOSE OF FACULTY/STAFF PROGRAMMING
-Saint Leo is a small liberal arts college which proudly promotes a small faculty:student ratio and relationships with students that go beyond the classroom -Our core values strongly promote providing students with faculty/staff to mentor & support them holistically -We want students to have “wow” resources and connections at this University to help them succeed
HOW TO's OF FACULTY/STAFF PROGRAMMING
REACH OUT -Remember the worst they can do is say no & if you don’t ask it’s already a no! -Find an opportune time to speak with them FACE TO FACE -After class? -Before class? -During their office hours?
FACE TO FACE - Because it's harder to say no -You can more easily explain the purpose & what you are hoping they will do -You can answer questions without the annoying back-and-forth of email communication -It shows commitment & care
IF THEY SAY NO -Thank them for considering your request! -Depending on how they said no, you could also … -Find out it they would consider it in the future with more advance notice (next semester?!) -Do they know of another faculty or staff member who might be interested?
IF THEY SAY YES -Confirm a date/time that works for them -Send a follow-up/reminder email the day before or day of the event -Give them nice specific directions to the location of the event -This would be great to do in an email as a follow-up -Give them suggestions for the closest available parking –they won’t know student lots! -Meet them at the door to your building at a designated time to let them in (they won’t have access!) -Introduce them to your residents -Can be individually or at the beginning to the group -Thank them for coming –show your appreciation! -Walk them out of the building -Follow-up later with a thank you email or card -If possible, share specific positive feedback you heard from students
